An official in Tanzania who ordered the police to whip school teachers as a punishment for arriving late has been sacked. An inquiry by the government found the caning of 19 teachers in the presence of their pupils was in breach of public service rules. District Commissioner, Albert Mnali, who ordered the canings in the northern town of Bukoba, told AFP news agency they deserved corporal punishment. He said they often reported late for duty and some of them were absent for several days. But Deputy Education Minister Mwantumu Bakari Mahiza called the incident unfortunate and utterly absurd. A government statement said it had concluded Mnali’s action was unacceptable and humiliating to teachers. One of the caned teachers told BBC news he was now too ashamed to meet his pupils
