ZAMBIA PUBLIC SECTOR STRIKE
Jun 11th, 2009 by admin
In Zambia, more than 5000 public sector workers have gone on strike over demands for better pay and improved working conditions. The workers are demanding a 25 per cent rise in their monthly salaries, and a monthly housing allowance of 150 US dollars. The nationwide strike in the ministries of health, land, mines, energy and agriculture come on the back of investigations regarding the alleged embezzlement of two million US dollars by civil servants. The alleged theft has cost the government around 120 million US dollars in foreign aid. The strike has crippled medical services and teaching in schools. As a result students haven’t been able to get to schools and several sick people have been turned away from hospitals
