NIGER POLICE SUPPRESS MP DEMO

Witnesses say an attempt on Sunday by 67 of Niger’s former MPs to reinstate parliament ended in a violent conflict with the local police. Security forces are also alleged to have used tear gas on protestors in the country’s capital Niamey. The political situation in Niger has been deteriorating since President Mamadou Tandja dissolved the national parliament and the country’s Supreme Court in May. He also passed new legislation that allows him to run for re-election in October, after a controversial referendum held last month.
