ZIMBABWE: MDC BOYCOTT
Oct 19th, 2009 by admin
Zimbabwe’s cabinet is due to meet tomorrow despite the boycott declared last Friday by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai‘s party Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). Commentators say President Robert Mugabe‘s decision to hold the weekly cabinet meeting without the leader of the former opposition party is an indicator of the fragility of the power sharing agreement signed in February. The MDC’s boycott follows the arrest last week of a senior member of the party, Roy Bennett, who was released on bail after two days in prison under terrorism charges. He was supposed to be taken to court today, but his trial has been postponed. Mr Tsvangirai is set to seek international help in a meeting tomorrow with the president of Mozambique, Armando Guebuza, who represents the Southern African Development Community.
