TOP SCIENTIST WARNS CLIMATE CHANGE WILL DEVASTATE AFRICA

A top British scientist has warned that global warming could cause severe floods, droughts and other extreme weather conditions in Africa. Professor Sir Gordon Conway, the outgoing chief scientist at the UK’s Department for International Development (DfID), says African communities need to develop more resilient lifestyles and livelihoods in order to face unpredictable effects and extreme weather events associated with climate change. The warning is contained in a new discussion paper published this week. Prof Conway suggests cyclone shelters, drought and flood resistant crops and diversification of income sources could help protect African families from climate change. Decreased access to drinking water, the spread of disease and damage to agricultural land and crops linked to climate change mean the poor will be the most vulnerable.
