INTERNATIONAL INVESTIGATION INTO KENYA’S ELECTION VIOLENCE
Nov 6th, 2009 by admin
The International Criminal Court (ICC)’s chief prosecutor announced yesterday that he would conduct a formal investigation into the 2008 post-election violence in Kenya. Luis Moreno-Ocampo, said that crimes against humanity had been committed in the post-election period that needed to be investigated. Kenyan Human Rights activists welcomed Mr Moreno-Ocampo’s move. Few, if any, culprits have been convicted of murder following last year’s violence. The violence, stoked by ethnic rivalries, left more than 1,000 people dead. It started when allies of Mr. Kibaki ignored widespread evidence of ballot fraud and declared him the winner of the presidential election over Mr. Odinga. Chirau Ali Mwakwere, Kenya’s transport minister, warned that gangs loyal to powerful politicians within their ethnic groups could explode if their leaders were hauled off to a court in Europe.
