Abortion is a word that is very well known but often times misconstrued by very many people. As such educating the public on the need to protect the unborn should not lie with the pro-life movement alone. On the other hand if we tell the truth then the currents of our society will work to our advantage. This is because protecting the unborn goes beyond the moral issue. The underlying factor should be understood, that the spiritual, social and moral issues that relate to whether an abortion ought to be carried out are intertwined and we really cannot divorce one form the other. Its definetly not the solution to the problem for women facing a crises situation. Its usually offered by medical practitioners as a clean legal way of solving the problem. What they do not say is that the problem just began. It’s a procedure that affects women psychologically, spiritually, physically, emotionally and medically. As such women who decide to go through with it, are usually ignorant of the fact that life begins at
conception and at three weeks after conception the heart starts to beat, then at 28 weeks you only an inch long but everything in a fully developed adult is present. At 12 weeks you are sleeping exercising energetically, opening and closing your mouth, turning your head and curling your toes. Besides, There is no safe and healthy procedure as complications many times occur. The entire process oftentimes will not only destroy the life of the unborn but negatively affect the life of the woman. She not only becomes tramatized by the experience, but has to live with the guilt and face the reality that she simply destroyed the physical evidence that she was ever pregnant. Women who face an unplanned pregnancy should be encouraged to choose life for their babies and look beyond their present state of bondage and realize that every child is a gift from God, irrespective of the circumstances surrounding the conception. Every one of us is living today because our parents chose to give life, so why should an innocent baby be deprived of that right, which is the right to live.
Questions that readily come to mind are:
First, should a teenage girl keep her baby when she obviously does not have resources to provide for the child?
Secondly, should one have a child who has been diagnosed with a life threatening disease or some form of disability? Putting into consideration that the child will probably never be able to live a healthy, normal life. Both questions are not reasons enough to terminate a
pregnancy. There is tremendous beauty in Gods creation, so what ever life brings our way should be accepted believing in Gods manifold strength and grace. Besides, our choices invariably shape our tomorrow and learning to live with them is part of life. Sometimes
a wrong choice becomes the culprit of mans problem, including the larger society. There have been reports published of the increase in the number of women who decide to abort due to
pressure from their husbands. Enforcing a decision on a woman is a selfish act and should be discouraged. Women have the right to decide on how their bodies ought to be treated and that is always with respect and dignity. I remember sometime back, a family member decided to abort her baby due to pressure from her husband. Today, she admits to having made a terrible mistake from which she has had live with for the better part of her life. She regrets going through with the abortion to satisfy her husband as she was not well informed to make the right choice. Who needs hindsight?
After research, reports raise some scenario to ponder on,
In case number 1.
A father has syphilis and the mother has TB, they have had four children, the first is blind, the second is stillborn, the third is deaf andthe fourth has TB. Then she finds she is pregnant again, Given the extreme situation and the mothers health would you consider recommending an abortion?
2. There is a preacher and his wife who are very poor. They already have 14 kids, she finds out she is pregnant with the 15th. They are living in tremendous poverty. Considering their poverty and excessive world population would you consider recommending an abortion?
3. A white man raped a 13 year old black girl and she got pregnant, if you were her parents would you recommend an abortion?
4. A teenage girl is pregnant, she is not married. Her fiance is not the father of the baby and he is very upset. Would you consider recommending an abortion?
If you answered YES or NO to any of these questions
history reports:
1. In the first case Beethoven was aborted.
2. In the second case John Wesley, one of the great evangelist of the 19th century and a great hymn writer was never born.
3. In the third case, Ethel Waters the great Black gospel singer died before her bith
4. And if you said “yes in the fourth case, then you have just sanctioned the murder of Jesus Christ.
The simple fact is every human being has a purpose for living. A babys entire value should not defined by the parents wanting it or not because it goes against the true essence of the value of life.
