The Africa Cup of Nations is drawing to a close and pressure is on the defending champion Egypt as they against Cameroon on Sunday.
The tournament has witnessed a lot of surprises and to tell us more on what to expect i spoke with Freelance sports journalist Eric Asoumougha.
WHAT’S YOUR TAKE ON THE AFRICAN NATIONS CUP?We are just entering the grand finale which will take place on Sunday in Ghana.
Egypt will face
Cameroon, a match that promises to be a very interesting one. It will be a different ball game because
Egypt actually defeated
Cameroon in the opening group match. It was a big blow to
Cameroon, and I don’t think that
Cameroon will go down so easily. Historically,
Egypt always comes out victorious against
Cameroon, so
Cameroon may have a problem, but they have worked hard to get to this stage. As such, they will like to do everything possible to offset the defending champions. On the other hand, the defending Champions will like to prove to the world that, what they did to Cote
d’Ivoire during the semifinal match wasn’t a fluke. The Egyptian team is a highly disciplined and committed team. It is not a cream of professionals at all. Ninety percent play football in local clubs in
Egypt. This is unlike most of the teams playing at the tournament. The African Nations Cup is going to prove that football is not about having professional players but having individuals playing as a team with good co-ordination.ANDRE BIKEY THE CAMEROON DEFENDER WILL NOT BE PLAYING, HOW MUCH OF AN IMPACT WILL THIS HAVE ON THE GAME?
It’s a pity, that should not have happened. I don’t think it will have a huge impact on the Cameroon defense because we have the Song brothers and Jeremy who plays opposition, he will come back to support the defense while his role in the midfield. The team does not rely on particular players to do the job for them.
Eto’o is not actually doing as well as people expected, I mean he is a top scorer and the all time leading African cup of Nations scorer after breaking the record Lauren Bouku of Ivory Coast, held for forty years.
WHAT’S BEEN DRAMATIC ABOUT THIS YEAR’S TOURNAMENT?
Nobody expected it to be dramatic but it’s turned out that way. It’s probably because the defending champions are in the finals, a big surprise.
Cameroon qualifying from group A ahead of
Morocco. Angola qualifying from group B, beating
Senegal. The number of goals also recorded in certain marches. In one of the semi finals played on Thursday, defending champions beat
Cote d’Ivoire,4-1. Nigeria played a very disappointing game, a shock to many.
