WAR IN SUDAN

The war in Sudanhas been ongoing for several decades now and its continuation has dwelt a severe blow to the region and to the continent. It’s cost to the continent cannot be quantified. At independence, this was an economy at par to that of South Korea. Today, the disparity is very clear. The violence has escalated to a level creating tremendous suffering for the people of Dar-fur.
The situation of war has not only affected neighbouring countries like Chad and Libya but the continent of Africa, as it has slowed development in Africa. If there is no improvement in Sudan, Africa will continue to experience a myriad of problems..
The United Nations Secretary-General Ban ki-moon expressed extreme concern over the recent upsurge in violence in the Sudanese region of Darfur calling on all sides to cease fighting and cooperate with the UN and African Union mediators.
The continued war could be attributed to many reasons some of which are: the structure of the population, the tribes inside and outside Sudan, as well as the neighbouring countries surrounding Sudan. The problem of Somalia cannot be solved if the issue of Sudan remains unsolved. Eritrea and Ethiopia are critical issues that cannot be influenced if Sudan remains unstable. These countries are dependent on Sudan one way or the other.
One ponders, how long Sudan will remain defiant to the international community to stop the violence and how committed the international community is to ending the violence.
