AFRICOM BEGINS…

As a US military unit designed to run America’s security operations in Africa becomes fully operational, its head says there is no hidden agenda. Many African states have reacted with hostility to the creation of the US Africa Command, known as Africom, seeing it as attempt by the US to protect its oil and mineral interests on the continent. General William Ward, who heads the unit, has responded by saying the US will not build large military bases or try to control African natural resources. Only Liberia has offered to host the unit, which is headquartered in the German city of Stuttgart. The US says it also plans to help African states with military training and will support peacekeeping and aid operations
