Increasing numbers of foreign female domestic workers in Lebanon are facing abuse and violence at the hands of their employers. The number of Ethiopian workers in particular reporting abuse has increased in recent months, according to the Lebanese Daily Star newspaper. Two Ethiopian women have turned a rented apartment into a makeshift sanctuary for women who flee their employers. The Ethiopian Consulate in Beirut told the Daily Star’s reporter it knew of one Ethiopian domestic worker who died a suspicious death and another who was in hospital with both legs broken. There is currently no reliable data, but the consulate estimates the number of Ethiopian workers in Lebanon to be between 40,000 and 50,000.
