OUTRAGE AT JOURNALIST MURDER
Feb 5th, 2009 by admin
Somalia’s National Union of Journalists has condemned the murder of a top radio journalist. Said Tahil Ahmed, the director of independent HornAfrik Radio, was shot dead on Wednesday by suspected Islamist gunmen. He was on his way to meeting called by the Islamist militia Al-Shabab which controls much of Mogadishu. A spokesman for the journalists’ union said Ahmed was murdered because of his strong and professional commitment to independent journalism. He described the killing as ‘appalling’. Other journalists in Mogadishu are reported to be fearful for their safety. Ahmed is the second journalist to be killed in Somalia this year. The non-profit organisation, Committee to Protect Journalists, ranks Somalia as the seventh most dangerous country in the world for journalists.
