MALAWI TESTS CHEAP EMERGENCY FOOD

Malawi is searching for cheaper alternatives to the therapeutic food it uses to treat malnutrition. The ready-to-use therapeutic food has been hailed as revolutionary in the treatment of chronically malnourished children. However the food, made with ingredients including milk, costs about five US dollars per kilogram. A non-profit programme called Project Peanut Butter is now conducting clinical trials using substitutes. More than 2,000 severely malnourished are taking part, and results are expected in six months. They hope a cheaper alternative will enable them to feed more children. A report by NGO Concern Worldwide says at least 70,000 Malawian children are in need of therapeutic food every year.
