HIV DRIVES FAIL TO REACH AT RISK

New research has found that national HIV prevention campaigns in at least five African countries fail to target those most at risk. The joint study reveals that few HIV prevention programmes draw on existing evidence to determine what drives HIV and AIDS in the countries studied. The collaboration between UNAIDS, the World Bank and governments of Kenya, Lesotho, Swaziland, Uganda and Mozambique took place between 2007 and 2008. In Lesotho, new infections are highest among people with multiple partners; in Mozambique new infections mainly occurred among sex workers. However none of the prevention strategies took these factors into account. The study recommended increased spending for HIV and tailoring programmes to target those most at risk.
