ROAD SAFETY FOR NON CAR USERS QUESTIONED IN AFRICA
Jun 17th, 2009 by admin
A review of global road safety has found Africa to have the highest number of deaths among pedestrians and cyclists. The Global status report on road safety says that while progress has been made in protecting car users, the needs of vulnerable groups such as cyclists and pedestrians has been neglected. The report suggests safety measures such as sidewalks, separate lanes for cyclists, reduced speed and improved trauma care could save thousands of lives each year. More than 90 per cent of the world’s road deaths occur in poorer countries, even though they own only 48 per cent of the world’s vehicles.
