MOZ TO MAKE HIV DRUGS
Jun 24th, 2009 by admin
Mozambique is set to produce its own antiretroviral drugs to fight HIV as early as April next year, according to officials. The Brazilian-funded venture will increase the availability and affordability of HIV treatment, in a country that has one of the highest infection rates worldwide. Mozambique has a HIV infection rate of 16 per cent, and the figure is as high as 35 per cent in worst-affected areas. Funding for the factory and technical training for staff will be provided by the Brazilian government. To begin with the factory will package drugs produced in Brazil, but local production will begin around April next year. Costs are estimated at 26 million US dollars
