East Africa’s first undersea internet cable went live yesterday, a month after its launch. The optic fibre cables links South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Mozambique to international communication networks. Its operators, Seacom say the cable will improve the region’s industrial and commercial prospects. According to news reports five institutions, including two universities and a communication company are already benefiting from the faster internet speeds. The Kenyan government has been laying cables in all its major towns, which it says will enable schools nationwide to link up with educational resources. East Africa’s 17,000 kilometres long undersea cables took two years to lay and cost more than 650 million US dollars.
