UN FOOD PROGRAMME SHORT ON FUNDS

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) says its delivery of aid is being affected by a shortfall in funding. According to the WFP, it has raised only 90 million US dollars out of the 160 million US dollars needed this year for its air service operations. Consequently it may have to close parts of its airway, used to fly aid workers to humanitarian trouble-spots. Deliveries have already been suspended to north Uganda, Ivory Coast and Niger. WFP spokesman Greg Barrow said the air service was a vital component of humanitarian operations across the world, and a drop in funding could have adverse effects. The UN says 102 million people in 78 countries received food aid last year.
