SOMALILAND DROUGHT DESTITUTION
Aug 6th, 2009 by admin
Officials say drought in the semi-autonomous region of Somaliland is putting thousands of families and their livestock at risk. About 100,000 people from Togdheer, Sool and Sanaag regions were displaced by the recent drought and have no support, according to information from government officials. In the Saraar region many water wells have dried up and the few remaining are serving large populations. In the town of Ainabo some 35,000 pastoralist families are said to have had moved away in search of pasture for their livestock. In June the Famine Early Warning Systems Network warned that the drought in Somalia’s central region had extended north into the key pastoral areas, and threatened more than 700,000 pastoralists and a significant number of urban households who relied on livestock for the livelihood.
