MADAGASCAR POWER-SHARING DEAL AGREED
Aug 11th, 2009 by admin
Madagascar’s political rivals have agreed a power-sharing deal in order to install a transitional government later this year. Madagascar has faced increasing isolation from other African countries, and cuts to its non-humanitarian aid after Andry Rajoelina seized power in a coup last year, forcing the then President Marc Ravalomanana into exile. The new agreement, signed on Sunday, will create a transitional government for 15 months before fresh elections take place. The new administration is expected to be established by September. The deal was mediated by two of Madagascar’s former presidents, and Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano.
