MALNUTRITION WORSENS IN CAR

A UN report says around 700,000 children under the age of five in the Central African Republic are severely malnourished. A recent survey by the UN’s Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in three of the country’s provinces found that 16 per cent of children under five are acutely malnourished and in just over five per cent of cases, malnutrition is extremely severe. UNICEF’s representative in the Republic, Jeremy Hopkins, said children are living below acceptable standards and the situation is getting worse. The UN agency said it needs 1.5 million US dollars for therapeutic foods, drugs and other supplies. The funds would also pay for a national nutritional survey, and training for community health workers.
