IMPROVEMENT ON HIV TREATMENT IN RWANDA

Figures released by the Rwandan government show significant progress has been made in providing HIV treatment and care nationwide. More than 70 per cent of people in need of antiretroviral (ARV) drugs have access to them, according to the government’s Treatment and Research AIDS centre. Sixty per cent of HIV positive women can access treatment for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission, and the same per cent of children have access to ARV drugs. Larger and more developed countries in the region, like Kenya and Uganda, are providing ARVs to fewer than half the people in need of them. Experts attribute these successes to the government’s commitment to reduce HIV, which has encouraged the expansion of HIV programmes.
