ICC TO HOLD KENYA RIOTS TRIAL
Oct 1st, 2009 by admin
The International Criminal Court is to prosecute suspected perpetrators of the violent riots that followed Kenya’s presidential elections in December 2007. The announcement yesterday by the ICC’s head prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo comes after the Kenyan government failed to set up a local tribunal. Mr Moreno-Ocampo vowed to put on trial those “most responsible” for the post-election violence, under charges of crimes against humanity. The violence which followed the disputed election is believed to have killed at least 1,300 people and displaced over 300,000 others. Moreno-Ocampo is expected to meet senior Kenyan authorities in the coming weeks to discuss details of the intended prosecution.
