MBEKI DELIVERS DARFUR PEACE PROPOSAL

An African Union panel led by former South African president, Thabo Mbeki, has produced a report that aims to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in Sudan’s Darfur region. Handing over the report to the AU in Ethiopia yesterday, Mr Mbeki said the Darfur conflict can only be resolved by the Sudanese people. The report will not be made public but analysts believe it will propose a local tribunal, backed by the AU, Sudan and possibly the Arab League, to deal with human rights abuses in Darfur. The AU set up the inquiry after a global arrest warrant was issued for Sudan’s president, Omar al-Bashir, accusing him of war crimes in Darfur. The UN says fighting in the region has led to 300,000 deaths since 2003. The Sudanese government says around 10,000 people have died.
