GUINEA: US$7 BN CHINESE DEAL

Guinea and China have signed a mining and oil deal this week that will bring more than seven billion US dollars in Chinese investment to the African country. The agreement was announced on Tuesday by Mamadi Kallo, Guinea’s secretary of state in charge of public works. China has yet to confirm the deal. Chinese investment in Africa has been criticised for disregarding local human rights issues and other domestic affairs. The international community has widely condemned Guinea’s military junta after government forces opened fire on 50,000 opposition supporters during a rally in Conakry on 28 September. At least 157 people were killed and scores of women were raped on the streets, according to human rights groups
