ETHIOPIA APPEALS FOR FOOD
Oct 22nd, 2009 by admin
Ethiopia launched an appeal today for emergency food aid to feed 6.2 million people threatened by hunger. The plea comes 25 years after a devastating famine in the country killed more than one million people. Ethiopia’s current plight is the consequence of a five-year drought that is affecting over 23 million people in seven East African countries. Aid agency Oxfam today criticised the donation of food aid to Ethiopia, arguing that it saves lives but fails to offer long-term solutions to hunger. Ethiopian government spokesman Bereket Simon said efforts are being made to improve agricultural productivity, to conserve water and soil and generally to help farmers become more capable of resisting the more frequent droughts that are part of the impact of climate change
