CLIMATE CHANGE SUMMIT SUSPENDED
Dec 14th, 2009 by admin
The United Nations climate change summit in Copenhagen has been suspended today after developing countries decided to stop co-operation. The G77-China bloc of 130 nations – which speaks for developing countries in the summit – stepped out of the climate change negotiation process over alleged moves by the Danish host government to sideline talks about emission cuts. Meanwhile, human rights groups in Denmark and in the United Kingdom have condemned the arrest of more than 1,000 climate change protesters in Copenhagen over the weekend. They claim Danish police may have broken European law by using controversial kettling and mass preventative arrest tactics to contain the protests. Tens of thousands of people took on the streets to demand action from government representatives at the summit. Almost all have already been released and only 13 people remain in custody, officials have said.
