CLIMATE DEAL EXPECTED TO PLUNGE

World leaders including United States president Barack Obama met early this morning in Copenhagen in a last effort to reach an agreement before the end of climate change talks. The United Nations summit is set to end this afternoon, but journalists at the conference say leaders plan to release a political statement without signing a new deal on climate change to replace the Kyoto Protocol. British newspaper The Guardian reported that a leaked draft text was “extremely weak”, after all-night negotiations failed to settle a dispute between industrialised and developing countries. The main objective of the conference was to establish a binding agreement that would set greenhouse emission targets. A new summit is expected to take place by mid-2010.
