NIGERIA: JOS DEATH TOLL RISES
Jan 20th, 2010 by admin
Violent religious clashes in the Nigerian city of Jos have killed more than 200 people, according to a rights watchdog. Human Rights Watch said today that the violence that erupted on Sunday has so far killed at least 151 Muslims and 65 Christians. Local authorities insist on a lower death toll of 20 dead. Security forces have been deployed to enforce a 24-hour curfew in the city and local reports say the situation is calmer today. More than 3,000 residents have already fled the city as a result of the fighting, according to the Red Cross. Reuters news agency quotes residents who say the violence started after an argument over the rebuilding of homes destroyed in religious clashes in 2008 that killed at least 200 people.
