Somaliland’s electoral panel announced on Thursday that the leader of the opposition Kulmiye party has won the breakaway republic’s presidential election. Ahmed Mohamud Silaanyo won nearly 50 per cent of Saturday’s vote, beating president Dahir Riyale Kahin. Kahin got only 33 per cent of votes and has promised to accept defeat. International observers praised the poll for being peaceful despite threats from armed Islamist groups from neighbouring Somalia.
