Why I am Thankful

Sitting with my family at table having Supper after church on Sunday, was a normal pastime in our household. A period when everyone took turns telling stories and happenings during the past week. The stories were usually diverse with everyone recounting tales from outings, meetings, school runs and social events. Also, a good time to hear news about extended family members in the village. These stories lasted no longer than three hours. However, this last Sunday it was all about the attacks in Paris, France. So continuing in the tradition was difficult.
However, no matter how much we dwell on the attacks, what is important is the world waking up and putting structures in place that will enable it defend itself against terrorist threats and attacks. What is true, is the issue goes beyond migration, which will become a crises all too soon in Europe and the rest of the world. In any case, how about those undocumented refuges who arrive the continent unnoticed. Nigeria, is not left out as Boko Haram, operating its form extremism is attacking and killing innocent citizens. These innocent lives are lost because of an agenda to Islamize the country with an only desire to project it’s image, through brutality.
So, on second thoughts, I shake my head remembering verses in the Bible and several hymns with an insight on how much we must treasure the gift of life. “Every day is a gift and tomorrow is not promised to anyone” a priceless one that no one can afford to abuse. As such there are several reasons why I am thankful and glad I am a Christian.
The first reason is Jesus Christ who came that we all might have life and have it in abundance. His righteousness makes us righteous and in him our every need is promised. So celebrating his awesome birth every Christmas is a reminder of how much we owe him, a reminder of how empty we are without him. It is Understanding the importance of a thread that binds us to him, such that no matter how many mistakes we make, he makes them right because he alone has the blueprint for life.
Secondly, is the importance of family which is the bedrock of life because it is the unique haven God has created for everyone here on earth, it helps to make and transform us with the knowledge of Jesus Christ.
My community of Friends who are there through the good and difficult times. Even though challenges and hardships put friendship to test. “A friend is one that knows you as you are, understands where you have been, accepts what you have become, and still, gently allows you to grow”. Then it’s the simple miracle of just living life every day and knowing we have his grace upon us. “Life is amazing. And then its aweful. And then it’s amazing again. And in between the amazing and the awful its ordinary and mundane and routine. Breathe in the amazing, hold on through the awful, and relax and exhale during the ordinary. That’s just living heartbreaking, soul-healing, amazing, awful ordinary life. And it’s breathtakingly beautiful.”
Finally, the value in living as his children and realizing that as his promised ones, we are enabled to live above problems and difficulties. This is simply because he is the only one that knows the number hairs on our heads. Besides, if he feeds the birds of the air, then surely he will feed us even in times of lack. He certainly knows much more about us than we know ourselves.
Thank You Lord for making me a Christian today.
