UGANDA DROUGHT CRISES
Feb 4th, 2009 by admin
Uganda’s government has declared an emergency in its north-eastern Karamoja region following bouts of severe drought. The region is on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe after agricultural output plummeted in 2008. Officials are calling for rapid food aid. The government and the UN World Food Programme have launched a programme to save 970,000 people from starvation. Karamoja, one of Uganda’s poorest and most marginalised regions, is beset by natural disasters and conflict. Aid workers say longer-term solutions to beat hunger are needed.
