Aug 27th, 2009 by admin
A new law to strengthen women’s rights in Mali has been blocked by President Amadou Toure, after thousands protested against it over the weekend. The proposed legislation would free women from the obligation of obeying their husbands, besides guaranteeing them more rights to inheritance and raising the minimum age for marriage to 18 years old. The outcome comes as a blow to women’s rights groups and to for President Toure, who supported the new bill but was compelled to drop it due to the pressure from Muslim leaders and extensive public demonstrations. The law will be sent back to parliament for revision.
