The fires that engulfed large parts of the Peloponnese since Thursday have finally subsided. Though, the government has defended the way it handled the fires but the opposition parties have been quick to condemn the speed with which the firefighting operation was conducted and the way those affected have been treated.
The good news is the government has set up a whole apparatus ready to support families who have lost their source of livelihood and it says everyone affected will be assisted.
Meanwhile, a major public protest was held last Friday at the syntagma square and protesters wore black as a sign of mourning for the dead. The protest was mostly peaceful and organized by bloggers through the distribution of emails.
If the fire outbreak is really the work of arsonists, who stands to gain from the huge devastation and how much will this affect the coming elections, called by Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis a few days before the fire outbreak.
The dreadful tragedy could have been prevented because there was enough warning that the winds were coming, ten days before.
We’re hearing over here that there will be another heatwave next week and with strong winds the fires may start again…ciao
Well, this may blow up in my face. I can safely say, the fires will not start again but if they do, they will be contained.
