AFRICAN LEADERS AND ZIMBABWE
Jul 2nd, 2008 by admin
African leaders at an African union summit in Egypt have called for a government of national unity in Zimbabwe. The leaders made the resolution to encourage Zimbabwe’s president Robert Mugabe to share power with opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai. The leaders of Botswana and Kenya spoke out against the Zimbabwean election process, but most African countries refused to condemn Mugabe publicly. Meanwhile, South Africa’s president Thabo Mbeki, who is mediating in the crisis, has rejected a European Union position calling for Tsvangirai to lead a government of national unity, saying that this must be agreed by Zimbabweans.
