SOUTH AFRICA: REFUGEES DENIED TREATMENT
Jul 2nd, 2008 by admin
Aid agencies and NGOs in South Africa say refugees and migrants in the country do not have adequate access to health care services. Reports say immigrants are systematically pushed to the back of hospital clinics, in preference to locals. According to Treatment Action Campaign, the hardest hit are immigrants living with HIV who are in need of continuous antiretroviral medication. Experts say the treatment is crucial and interruptions can have serious health implications. South Africa has one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in the world and is struggling to cope with the pandemic.
