Thousands of protesters in Nigeria have taken to the streets of Lagos to demonstrate against rising fuel prices. Trade union the Nigeria Labour Congress is demanding the government drops plans to deregulate the oil sector. It also wants it to increase the minimum wage and speed up the process of electoral reform. The government has urged the union to return to negotiations saying the protests could cause chaos. However the Congress has warned it will conduct further protests if its demands are not met. It says that deregulating the oil sector will aggravate fuel shortages and hike pump prices. Nigeria is the world’s biggest crude oil exporter but imports about 85 per cent of its petroleum products.
