KENYAN POLICE ACCUSED OF TORTURE

US-based group Human Rights Watch has urged an inquiry into what it calls the “collective punishment” of civilians in the state of Mandera, in north-east Kenya. According to Human Rights Watch, a joint police and military operation to disarm local militias in October last year led to thousands being tortured and women being raped. It followed clashes between the local Garre and Murulle clans in which 21 people were killed. Kenya’s police spokesman has denied the claims and has asked HRW to show evidence to back up their findings.
