Overlooked tropical diseases such as parasitic worms affect up to 500 million across Sub-Saharan Africa, according to a study released today. The PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases journal says there are twice as many cases of these treatable but neglected diseases as of tuberculosis, or malaria. Tropical diseases are often deadly and usually affect children and pregnant women. One of the researchers, Peter Hotez, said that an annual investment of 200 million US dollars over the next five years could help cut cases significantly. The majority of the cases related in sub-Saharan Africa can be cured with proper treatment
