MALIANS PROTEST AGAINST WOMEN’S RIGHTS

Up to 50,000 people protested against a new women’s rights law in Mali’s capital Bamako on Saturday. The proposed legislation would strengthen women’s rights in marriage, meaning they would no longer be obliged to obey their husbands. It would also entitle children born outside a marriage to a share of any inheritance. Malian Muslim organisations have criticised the law, saying it goes against Islamic principles. A spokeswoman from the National Union of Muslim Women’s Associations claims only a minority of women support the changes. The law was passed earlier this month and still has to be signed by the president.
