ZAMBIA ARRESTS HONKING PROTESTERS

Zambian police have arrested at least nine people, including two opposition MPs, for allegedly honking their horns in protest after former president Frederick Chiluba was cleared of corruption charges. Civil society groups had initially called on drivers to honk their horns for 10 minutes every Friday after the court’s decision two months ago. But last week the executive director for Caritas Zambia, Samuel Mulafulafu, called for the honking to be extended to seven hours, starting from 5pm. Zambia’s home affairs minister, Lameck Mangani, said the arrests would continue as he said they risked destabilising the peace of the nation. Mr Chiluba was acquitted on charges of stealing donor money, though his two co-accused were each sentenced to three years in jail.
